Koinonia is an intentional Christian community located outside Americus, Ga. founded in 1942 by Clarence and Florence Jordan and Martin and Mabel England. The community's commitment to pacifism and racial equality attracted national attention in the 1950s as they endured bullets, bombs, and a boycott. Well-known activists such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dorothy Day worked together with Koinonia during the Civil Rights Movement. Through it all, blacks and whites lived and worked together side by side in a time and culture where segregation was the norm and anything else could be met with violence and resistance. It was also at Koinonia Farm that Habitat for Humanity and Fuller Center for Housing began. Today our focus is to Feed the Hungry, both physically and spiritually. Spiritually, we facilitate a formational discipleship intern program, offer hospitality to thousands of folks each year, and travel around the country to share our story. Physically, we offer a variety of healthy whole foods, making sure availability is wide-spread, even for those who otherwise can't afford such quality foods. Currently we produce varieties of vegetables, flowers, and herbs on 2 acres and are nurturing and restoring soil on an additional 3 acres. Growing a healthy mix of heirlooms and hybrids, we focus on taste, genetic preservation, and production. We raise 100% grass-fed beef and pastured pork, sold locally by the cut, and pastured eggs, sold locally by the dozen. We are committed to regenerative agricultural practices based on the belief that we are to be stewards of God's creation. No antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, de-wormers, or synthetic fertilizers are used in raising our animals. We have 92 acres of pecan orchards that we have committed to managing using biological methods. This is a transition from conventional farming to a system focused on restoring life to the entire ecosystem. Instead of using chemical pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, we are using things like fish emulsifiers, microbials, compost teas, and paying attention to the environment of the orchards. We feel God is asking us to show that you can farm with creation care in mind, even in large-scale farming. We feature these pecans in our mail-order business, which started in the late 50s after the KKK forced us out of our local farming operations. This commercial bakery business features such products as chocolate pecan bark, granola, peach cakes, smoked pecans, cinnamon spiced pecans, pecan pies, pecan brittle, and our unique pecan stuffed dates.
