Sow America Partners with Keep Okaloosa Beautiful to Launch Organics Recycling Pilot Program

Okaloosa County, FL - Sow America, a 501c3 non-profit organization, has teamed up with Keep Okaloosa Beautiful to introduce an innovative new program aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability. The Organics Recycling Pilot Program will divert food waste, wood waste, fish waste and leaf litter to create compost, which will be distributed locally, especially to community gardens.

The program will feature both residential and commercial components. Residents who sign up for the program will be able to drop off their organic waste at the Okaloosa County Recycling facility, located at 84 Ready Ave. They will then receive a portion of the finished compost that is created from their donation in a few months. The commercial side of the program will involve Sow America picking up food and fish waste from local restaurants and organizations.

“The organics recycling pilot program is going to be a great addition to Okaloosa County. It will allow residents not only a way to recycle their food waste, but also provide a hands on learning opportunity for all ages, and help support the many community gardens in Okaloosa County. We are excited for this first step in adding an in person look at ways the community can recycle and reuse!”” said Kali Hiemier, Executive Director of Keep Okaloosa Beautiful.

"We are excited to partner with Keep Okaloosa Beautiful to launch this program," said Sow America founder Cameron Howard. "By diverting organic waste from landfills and turning it into compost, we can create a valuable resource for the community. This compost will be used to build community gardens, help others grow their own food, and support regenerative agriculture practices in our area. We are also proud to announce that some of the compost produced will be used to build and support the Twin Cities Pavilion Garden, an assisted living facility in Niceville FL. We hope that this program will inspire people to think more about the waste they generate and encourage them to take action to reduce it."

The Organics Recycling Pilot Program will have a positive impact on the area in many ways. In addition to reducing waste, the program will provide a valuable resource for community gardens and other local projects. Sow America also plans to offer educational classes and resources to help people learn more about composting and sustainability.
